04-Aug-2024 – Holy Spirit helps you to pray

Published by Bro. Sunil Binkam on

Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. – Romans 8:26

We know that everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ and receives the gospel of their salvation will receive the Holy Spirit to be with them and in them, leading them into all truth. The Holy Spirit was given as a helper to help us grow into the fullness of the image of Jesus Christ.

Today we will focus only on His help in prayer. According to Romans 8:26, the Holy Spirit helps our infirmities. What is our infirmity? We don’t know how to pray and what to pray for. The reason is that we can only see the things around us and understand based on visible facts and events. But God knows the full picture.

Often when we pray, we ask God to do something or to show His favor according to our understanding. When this does not align with the will of God, it cannot bring results. So, God gave us His Holy Spirit to correct our prayers.

How? The Holy Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Consider two friends who want to go on a tour but need their parents’ permission. Both go to one of their parents, and one friend starts explaining the plan and asks for permission. If the other friend thinks the explanation was insufficient, he will pitch in and provide more details to convince the parents.

In the same way, when we pray, we ask based on the knowledge we have. But God, by the principle He set on His own, either agrees and makes things work according to our prayer when it aligns with His will, or does not answer our prayer if it does not align with His will. Instead of leaving it like that, God, through the Holy Spirit, enables us to pray correctly. Why?

He who searches our hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. – Romans 8:27

The Holy Spirit knows the mind of God, the will of God, and what our prayer should be. You might wonder why God has to do all these things. He is sovereign, and only His will be done anyway, right?

But our God is a loving God. From the beginning, God always wanted to partner with us to do anything on this earth. God could name all the animals and birds, but He wanted to partner with Adam. God can destroy evil, but He wanted to partner with us. That’s why He always finds a way to enable us to stand strong in Jesus Christ.

So, what did God teach us today? The Holy Spirit was given to us to lead us in right prayer. Even if our prayer goes off track, He will correct it with groanings that cannot be uttered. But not everyone will have this experience, right?

For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit mind the things of the Spirit. – Romans 8:5

Quench not the Spirit. – 1 Thessalonians 5:19

As we walk on this earth, we are influenced by worldly things because our flesh is made to react to the world. But the world is corrupted, so corrupt things influence our flesh. When we follow the desires of the flesh, we cannot mind or observe or hear the voice and leading of the Holy Spirit. In such times, the Spirit is quenched.

So there is one secret we just now found: If we walk according to the Spirit, our prayers will always be answered. The Spirit of God helps us to know the mind of God so that we can pray according to His will. Even if we do not understand and have a desire to pray, the Holy Spirit will take over and pray for us.

What a great privilege we have in Jesus Christ! We must always be thankful to Him for this.

Prayer:

Dear loving heavenly Father, thank You for Your love and grace. Thank You for reminding me about the work of the Holy Spirit in me to pray in the right way. Thank You for Him, as He prays on my behalf when I cannot do so properly. Help me to walk according to the Spirit to experience this privileged prayer life. I pray in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen!
