18-Jul-2024 – Give to the LORD

“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.” – Malachi 3:8
In modern Christianity, the subject of tithes and offerings often sparks debate and discomfort. Today, we’ll explore what the Holy Spirit teaches us through this passage, focusing on our theme: “if you believe.”
God accuses the Israelites of robbery – a strong charge indeed. How can one rob the Almighty? When we fail to fulfill what God expects of us, it’s considered robbery in His eyes. Here, God specifically mentions tithes and offerings.
Tithes and offerings are distinct concepts. Tithes traditionally represent a tenth of one’s income, while offerings are additional gifts. Some may wonder: Has God become materialistic? Does He bless us only if we give Him money?
To understand this, we must consider the historical context:
- In ancient Israel, tithes provided for the Levites, who served in the temple and had no other means of support.
- Offerings ensured there was “meat in God’s house” – resources for worship and community support.
Today, this principle supports those who’ve dedicated their lives to God’s service. Whether full-time ministers or those balancing secular work with ministry, their responsibilities remain:
- Teaching God’s word
- Guiding believers in their spiritual walk
- Praying for the congregation’s well-being and deliverance
- Facilitating corporate worship and prayer
In return for our faithfulness in giving, God promises to “open the windows of heaven” with blessings beyond our imagination. This could manifest as:
- Victory in personal battles
- Provision in times of lack
- Spiritual growth and enlightenment
The crucial element is our belief and intention. When we give:
- We give to the Lord, not to an individual pastor or church
- Our heart’s purity and willingness matter more than the amount
- We trust God, not humans, with the outcome of our giving
If church leaders misuse these resources, they’ll face divine judgment, much like Eli’s sons in the Old Testament. However, as believers, our reward comes from God when we give with the right heart.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your love and grace. We appreciate Your guidance on the important matter of tithes and offerings. We acknowledge that financial topics can be challenging for us. Please forgive our shortcomings and help us develop a healthy attitude towards money, especially in relation to Your church. Grant us wisdom to give with pure hearts, trusting in Your provision and promises.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
