12-Jul-2024 – Continue the work

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts: According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not – Haggai-2:4
Today, God encourages us to work even in discouraging situations. In the previous verse, God reminds the people about the glory of the first temple and the current temple they are working to repair. The comparison may seem disheartening, yet God says, “Be strong and work.” He gives a reason for this encouragement—His presence and His covenant with them.
Reflecting on the journey of Israel from Egypt to Canaan, it was a time filled with God’s glorious presence, protection, and provision. The LORD fought battles for Israel and performed miracles to sustain them.
In our practical life, we might face a phase where past glories seem lost. For instance, consider a person who had a well-paying job, a nice house, and children in a reputed school. Suddenly, losing that job disrupts everything—the lifestyle, the house, the children’s education.
After a period of hardship, if that person finds a new job, even if it’s not as prestigious as before, he starts rebuilding his family life. He remembers the former glory and compares it to the present. Yet, he continues to work. This is what God desires from us. If we persist in our efforts, God blesses our work and brings forth its fruit.
Believing in His covenant is crucial. All the promises of the Bible are “yes” in the name of Jesus Christ for us.
Prayer:
Dear loving Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and grace. Thank you for reminding us of your support and guidance, even in the low points of our lives. You are there to restore our glory, but we must continue to work as you guide us. Help us to stand strong and persist in our efforts. I pray in the name of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen!
