The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah. – Psalm 87:6

In Psalm 87, the Psalmist describes the greatness of Zion. Zion is the dwelling place of God as the temple was built there in Jerusalem. Based on today’s Psalm, God wants to speak to us about another important aspect today.

His foundation is in the holy mountains. – Psalm 87:1

This verse tells us that the foundations of the city of God were on the holy mountains. So, God chose Zion as the place to dwell, not just to visit once or twice.

The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. – Psalm 87:2

If we remember the distribution of the Israelites in the land of Canaan, the 12 tribes were distributed across various areas in the land. All these places represent the dwelling places of Jacob, which is the whole of Israel. But among all those, the LORD loves the gates of Zion. The gates represent the entrance to the city of God.

The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah. – Psalm 87:6

Practically, all the people in this world were born in various places where they live. But God says here, when he counts the people, he will count as if they are born in Zion. So God is conveying something deep.

Overall, the whole Psalm itself is conveying something deeper than we perceive. If you consider Israel as a whole, which is represented by Jacob, then Jerusalem or Zion is the city of God and the capital. That means all the necessary spiritual resources and the governance for the physical requirements of the whole nation happen from the capital.

If we consider our entire life as like Israel, then various aspects like family, friends, career, health, wealth, and spirituality—which is also called the relationship with God—are like the dwelling places.

Among all these dwelling places, God chose the relationship with him as the most important and loving aspect in our life. The relationship with Him is not only for the enrichment of our spirit and the things of the spirit realm but also for the welfare of all other aspects of our life, as we saw just before.

When the LORD shall count the blessings of all the areas of our life, He shall count that all these blessings are born in the relationship with God. What a wonderful thing to even remember that.

We know our God is a good God and all the blessings are timely, perfect, and fulfilling when we give importance to the spiritual aspect in our life, which is the relationship with Him.

Prayer

Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you for your love and grace. Thank you for reminding us today about the source of all the blessings in any area of our life. Help me, Lord, to let my life be a dwelling place for you. Help me not to neglect the relationship with you. I pray in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen!
