13-Jun-2024 – Your God is wonderful counsellor

I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel – Psalms 16:7

In this Psalm, the Psalmist declares that he will honor and glorify God because of the counsel he received from Him. This shows that God provides counsel, advice, and consultation to His children.

As part of this month’s theme, we remember today that our God is a counsellor. When you visit a counsellor, you seek advice and suggestions, paying attention to and implementing them to experience change. Similarly, our God is a counsellor in every aspect of our lives—be it marriage, career, education, friendships, relationships, health, or anything else. Because He created us, He has prepared everything to be available to us in due seasons.

Throughout the Bible, God gave His counsel to many people. Today, we will refer to Gideon’s example for our meditation.

And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. – Judges 6:16

Here, when the nation of Israel was under the bondage of the Midianites, the Lord chose Gideon as the deliverer and spoke to him. If you observe the later verses until verse 24, there is a conversation between the angel of the LORD and Gideon. All this interaction was to clarify to Gideon that it was truly the LORD speaking to him.

And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it: – Judges 6:25

Then the LORD advised Gideon on the next action plan. First, he needed to destroy the altar of Baal. Before receiving victory or deliverance, any objectionable things that have become altars in our lives must be removed. This is what the LORD was teaching Gideon.

Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. – Judges 6:37

Even though Gideon destroyed the altar of Baal, he still wasn’t sure that he was chosen for the task of delivering the people of Israel from the Midianites. So he asked God to show a sign as he described. God did exactly what Gideon asked for, igniting confidence in Gideon’s heart.

In our lives, sometimes we do valiant things in the name of God but remain doubtful whether we are truly appointed for tasks like sharing the gospel, sharing our testimony, supporting a ministry or person, or partaking in various offices of ministry. God does not leave us in doubt but clarifies through His word, visions, dreams, and prophetic offices.

And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. – Judges 7:2

When Gideon gathered people to fight against the Midianites, he gathered many, thinking humanly that a large army is needed to fight a strong enemy. But God advised Gideon to reduce the strength. In our lives, sometimes we plan from a human perspective, but God’s goal is to be glorified in our lives, so He directs us according to His plan.

So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink. – Judges 7:5

Gideon didn’t know how to choose the right people for the war. The LORD gave him a strategy to identify them by the way they drank water from a stream. In our lives, we sometimes don’t know what to choose and what to leave while making important decisions.

In my practical life, when I bought my house in 2017, I was seeking the LORD’s will. God spoke to me through Psalms 37, where it says multiple times, “the righteous shall inherit the earth.” I doubted my righteousness because my walk with the LORD was not perfect. But an inner voice assured me that I am righteous not because of my works, but because of my faith in the LORD. After that, everything fell into place, and I was able to buy the house with God’s timely provisions.

Our GOD is the wonderful counsellor. He enables us to understand that it is Him speaking to us. He helps us build confidence for the tasks He assigns. He leads and guides us with strategic advice and wisdom to make the right decisions at the right time. We need to do only one thing: “Hear Him”!

Prayer:

Dear loving Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and grace. Thank you for reminding us today that you are the wonderful counsellor. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to recollect how you gave your counsel during my house purchase. In every aspect of our lives, you are there to give us the best counsel. Help us to hear your advice and act accordingly. I pray in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen!
