07-Jun-2024 – Stand Strong on the Word to Overcome Scripture-Based Attacks

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” – Revelation 3:13
In this letter to the church of Philadelphia, the Lord praises the church for maintaining their faith, even though their strength was insufficient to face all challenges. The Lord particularly highlights the patience displayed by this church.
If we study carefully, we see that they exhibited patience with the people of Satan, who disguised themselves as Jews and became a stumbling block. This church did not have enough strength to resist them fully but still adhered to the gospel preached by the word of the Lord.
Because of their perseverance, the Lord promised them victory: the false Jews would come to acknowledge that the Lord loved this church. Moreover, when tribulation comes upon the whole world, this church would be exempted, taken away before the great tribulation. Yet, God gives a warning to hold fast to their patience and faithfulness, lest someone else takes away their crown or prize. If this church could withstand, they would become a pillar in the temple of God, be in His presence forever, and receive a new name.
As believers, we too face various criticisms. Just as the church in Philadelphia struggled against false Jews who used scripture and tradition to attack, we may encounter challenges when standing on God’s word.
For example, you might faithfully offer your tithe every month, only to hear others claim that tithing isn’t for the New Testament church. Conversely, some church leaders might pressure you to give more than the tithe to pursue their own plans rather than God’s plan, causing confusion and discouragement.
Or, if you receive a word from God encouraging you to buy land and build a house, you might face criticism for seeking material possessions. On the other hand, church leaders might overly emphasize material wealth and luxury, leading to further confusion.
In all these situations, God calls us to stand on His word. His grace is sufficient. His name must be glorified. His character, especially His love, should be displayed through us, as described in 1 Corinthians 13. The fellowship of the Holy Spirit helps us discern whether what we hear or experience is from the Lord.
Therefore, continuously reading and meditating on the word, and asking the Holy Spirit to teach us, is crucial. Whatever we do, plan, and execute, we must rely on the word of God prayerfully. Our Lord is a living Lord and He will not lead us astray.
Prayer
Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you for your love and grace. Thank you for teaching us today about the importance of standing on the word of God to withstand the temptations from the devil, who wrongfully uses scripture against us. Help us to discern and protect ourselves from these traps. I pray in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen!
