30-May-2024 – Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed

Published by Sunil Binkam on

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field. – Matthew 13:31

In this parable, Jesus teaches us about the kingdom of heaven by comparing it to a grain of mustard seed. Initially, the seed is small, but it eventually grows into a tree that provides shelter for the birds of the air.

When we think about the kingdom of heaven, it began with God alone. God created humans to have fellowship and a relationship with them. However, humanity was marred by the sin of Adam and Eve.

God then chose Abraham, and through him, He formed the nation of Israel. This stage is akin to the roots spreading across the ground, allowing the tree to stand firmly.

Through the Israelites, the Lord Jesus came, serving as the main trunk or stem of the mustard tree. In Jesus, both Israelites and Gentiles find the way to the Father in heaven. They gather and find shelter in Him, just as birds find shelter in the tree.

All who find refuge in Jesus become citizens of heaven. Thus, the kingdom of heaven grows from the small mustard seed into a great tree, providing shelter to many.

Prayer

Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you for your love and grace. Thank you for teaching us today about the kingdom of heaven and how it grows to include all of us. We are grateful for Jesus, in whom you have gathered us. Help us to remember this always and to be thankful. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
