Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his – Romans 8:9

This verse is a self check to understand whether we belong to God or not. But how do we check? Let us see some of the ways to check. The first one is as below:

They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit mind the things of the Spirit – Romans 8: 4

By nature, we desire the things of the flesh. But what are the things of the flesh? The bible defines the things of the flesh.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions ****and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God – Galatians 5:19-21

The verse is self explanatory and lists many things which influences us in this world to fall. To consider some simple things, hatred is a common feeling when someone has a bad experience with someone. Discord is another common trait of human beings. When you open social media, you can see a lot of posts with disagreement and arguments. In the same way, sexual things right from movies to comics and fantasies are all common in today’s culture and our flesh is very much influenced. If we belong to God, the very first nature that we develop is a feeling of guilt when we indulge in the works of flesh. Let us just keep aside the outcome whether we are overcoming the impulse or not, but there will be a new nature of feeling guilty and an urge to ask God for forgiveness. This is the first sign that we belong to God.

The second one is –

The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be – Romans 8:7

This another important and easy check. Unless we are convicted by the Holy Spirit of God, we cannot accept our sinfulness. When we accept our sinfulness, we can have a desire to do something with God to get forgiveness and we will start minding the law of God and the words of God. So this is another check.

With these two aspects, the question for us is – “Do you have the Spirit of God in you?”. Introspect, retrospect and use the above two principles and find the answer. If your answer is “No”, still you have a chance. Jesus is the way, the truth and life. If you accept him as your personal savior, you will come under the sacrifice made by Jesus on the cross of Calvary. Then you will be marked by the Holy Spirit of God and start experiencing the above two principles in your life.

Prayer

Dear heavenly Father, thank you for your love and grace. Thank you for the two simple principles you taught us today. When we know that we belong to you, it gives us an assurance of leading into the light and life. Thank you for the sacrifice of Lord Jesus Christ, because of which, I got an opportunity to become your child and heir of all the uncountable blessings in thy Son’s name. Help me to live the life of freedom from sin and start exercising the power in the name of Jesus, I submit this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
