29-Jan-2024 – The faith of the size of the mustard seed

Published by Sunil Binkam on

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. -Matthew 17:20

Here Jesus compared the faith to a mustard seed. But from this verse alone, we cannot comprehend, we need to refer to another verse also. That is –

It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it. -Luke 13:19

Here, the characteristic of the mustard seed is described. At first glance, it appears minute compared to other seeds. However, as it grows, it transforms into a shelter for the birds of the sky. Initially, one might find it hard to believe that it could reach such a stature to host the birds of the sky.

When we contemplate faith, it often starts with small matters—believing in the healing of less critical ailments, securing a job, or overcoming a debt. However, when it comes to having faith in seemingly insurmountable challenges, we may struggle. In critical situations, our faith tends to waver, influenced by the circumstances surrounding us and the ensuing panic.

In this passage, Jesus conveys that with a mustard seed-sized faith—belief in the smallest of things—one can command even a mountain, representing seemingly insurmountable challenges, to be moved, and it will happen. The symbolism of the mountain emphasizes the notion of impossible situations. Therefore, having faith in smaller situations can serve as a foundation for cultivating the ability to believe in the most challenging and seemingly impossible circumstances, and this faith has the power to bring about the desired outcomes.

This concept holds true because when we cultivate genuine faith in even the smallest matters, it generates experiences with God. These experiences act as fertilizers, nurturing a robust impression of God—revealing His capabilities, His willingness to act in our lives, and providing insights into His nature. Consequently, this foundation empowers us to stand firm in the face of seemingly impossible situations. Our strength doesn’t derive from our own fortitude but from the fact that the Almighty God, stronger than any circumstance, stands by our side.

May God assist us in cultivating a strong faith, beginning with a mustard seed-sized foundation.

Prayer

Dear loving heavenly Father, I express gratitude for the lesson on the faith of a mustard seed. Guide me in learning to have faith in the smallest things. Lead me to strengthen my faith, becoming a witness to what you can accomplish in my life. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
