For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us – 1 Corinthians 5:7

The passover is a great work of God for our lives. To understand it’s value for the New Testament believers, we need to recollect what happened on the very first passover.

For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. -Exodus 12:12

The context was, God’s judgement was ready to be executed on the land of Egypt. But the Isreal people were also in the land of Egypt. This is exactly the situation in our current generation. Because of the evil doings of the world, it is under the wrath of God. At any point of time, the judgement of God is about to be kick started.

And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. -Exodus 12:13

God gave a sign to be on the houses of the Israelites, so that when the judgement is executed, only the blood on the house could save him from the judgement and wrath of God. This represents the gospel we preach today in the current world. A house is nothing but the person himself. Unless a person is sprinkled with the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and marked for God, through faith, we cannot escape the wrath.

And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. -Exodus 12:7-8

For Israelites, after the wrath there is an escape from Egypt. They are preparing for the journey. And their journey is physical journey. That’s why God gave them instructions what they should eat and where they should eat.

Moreover, when they eat, they should eat unleavened bread. The lamb they should kill must be unblemished. This indicate holiness, and not letting the old nature to influence our new nature. Because old dough only be fermented not the new dough.

This reminds us an important aspect of the salvation. That is, if a person eats outside the house where the blood is sprinkled, then there is no use. He may follow all the requirements of unleavened bread but if he is not in the house, he cannot be saved. That means, how much ever good works we do, which complies with the moral uprightness of the Law of the God, unless we are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, we cannot escape the wrath and judgement of God.

That’s why the passover was very important. God also told as below –

And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. -Exodus 12:13

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. -1 Corinthians 11:24-26

One more thing is, the Israelites people observed the passover and then escaped Egypt and then remembering from then on, whenever they were observing the feast of passover. But we are observing the feast of passover in the form of the Holy Communion, and we will be taken away from the this world later to be with the Lord.

We are publishing the wonderful work of God through Jesus Christ, which is the passover lamb.

Prayer

Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you for today’s meditation and reminding us the importance and highlights of our salvation in Jesus Christ. Help us to be in the house without wandering out. Help us to stay faithful in the house so that we could escape the wrath. I pray in the name of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen!
