and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob – Genesis 25:33

This portion is a familiar portion where Jacob stole the birthright from Esau. But today under the guidance of Holy Spirit let us learn a lesson from this portion.

A birthright typically refers to a privilege, possession, or entitlement that a person has by virtue of being the first born into a particular family. To understand the value of the birthright, we can refer to the blessings given by Isaac to Jacob thinking he was the first born Esau.

If we look from Esau’s perspective, he was negligent, irresponsible and seemingly illiterate about the privileges he has being the first born. That’s why he valued his birth right as the value of one day’s hunger. In his eyes, he might be thinking, if cannot get food then, he will die and what he will do with birth right if he was dead. But practically, if he was so hungry his mother could have given something, he could have eaten some fruits or even drank water or so many other ways. But whatever may be the reason, he rejected his privilege and sold it unto the hands of his brother.

Now coming to our lives, being the born again believers of Jesus Christ, we are having the privilege of associated to God as children. We have the privilege of the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit. We have the privilege of using the authority in the name of Jesus Christ in our daily lives against the powers of darkness and the world.

Like how Jacob utilised the weak moment of his brother, the devil in our lives always vigilant to find the weakest moment in our life. In Esau’s case, his brother asked explicitly but in our case, the devil will not explicitly like will you give up your privilege to enjoy so and so pleasure etc. But he plots his traps around us and when we fall into it, automatically we are being ignorant and irresponsible and almost equivalent to giving up our right and privilege to rebuke him and put him in his place.

Once Esau lost the privilege, he could not get it back. a privilege brings opportunity also to use the privilege. A lost privilege means lost opportunity. Now, in our lives, God is patient and giving many chances for us to recognise the value of the privilege we have in Jesus and the authority we have in Jesus. But there is a time appointed by God, beyond which we cannot get another chance to turn back to God and retain our privilege in him.

Now the question is, “Do you have the understanding of your privilege in Jesus?”. If you are called to be a prayer warrior, your privilege is to get answers for your prayers for many people to change their lives. If you are a teacher of the word, your privilege is to teach the truth of the word to many. If you are a prophet, your privilege is to unveil the mysteries from the word of God for their present situations. If you are a miracle worker, your privilege is to testify the supernatural power of God. That’s why devil wanted to allure you with something that your flesh falls for. Be vigilant and when the time is still available, recognize the privilege and turn back to God. May God help all of us.

Prayer

Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you for your wonderful love and grace. Today’s word is a very important and deep word. Yes Lord, you gave all of us the privilege of being your children on this earth to be witnesses for your glory. But Lord, based on the weakness in our flesh, we are falling and unable to operate in the authority we have in Jesus. Help us to understand this and live up to the stature you gave to us in Jesus. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
