“Be not afraid, only believe.” – Mark 5:36

Today, we will learn from the well-known story of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue whose daughter was on the verge of death. With no other options left to save her, he came to Jesus and asked Him to heal her.

“And Jesus went with him.” – Mark 5:24

Jesus agreed and started His journey to Jairus’s house. As the journey progressed, many people followed Jesus. During this time, a woman with a blood issue came and touched Jesus with the expectation of being healed. Her faith resulted in her healing.

Jesus stopped and inquired about the person who touched Him. The woman could not hide and had to come forward and confess. Jesus appreciated her faith.

Meanwhile, people from Jairus’s house arrived and told him that his daughter was dead. Before Jairus could burst into tears, Jesus told him not to be afraid but to only believe.

From this context, we see that Jairus went to Jesus because he believed in Him. As Jesus walked with him toward his house, Jairus felt comforted. When the woman touched Jesus’s garment, Jairus might have been worried for his daughter. Upon hearing the news of her death, his heart would have stopped for a moment, filled with agony. At this very point, Jesus told Jairus to just believe.

In our current generation and life, as believers in Jesus Christ, we naturally go to Him in prayer. Our loving and compassionate God responds to us through His word in ways we can understand. When we talk to a man of God, we may receive encouragement from the word of God. As we wait for the manifestation of answers to our prayers, the delay can grow longer. At this point, our worries and anxieties may kick in, slowly leading us to doubt the answers to our prayers.

But Jesus tells us not to stop believing in Him in any situation, even if it seems like everything is over. The reason we are still alive is the hope of the fulfillment of His promises in our lives.

Prayer

Dear loving heavenly Father, thank You for Your love. Thank You for Your grace. Thank You for reminding us of the vulnerability of our faith. When things seem positive, we are quick to believe Your words. But when they turn difficult, our doubtful minds fuel our anxiety. Forgive us and help us to overcome this. We pray in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen!
