10-Mar-2024 – You need faith to seek the things of heaven
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. -Colossians 3:1
You need faith to seek things of heaven! This verse talks about a conditional situation. If you are risen with Christ, seek those things which are above. What is being risen with Christ? To understand this, let us look at couple of verses from previous chapter, and helps to build the context.
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. -Colossians 2:11-12
The circumcision in the old testament days were given as a sign that they belong to God. This circumcision was a required from the man by cutting-off his foreskin. This was required only fro men because, they are given the responsibility of leading the family in the fear and knowledge of God.
Now this portion talks about a circumcision that is required from each one of us irrespective of whether male or female. Because each one of us are given the responsibility of the temple of God, the dwelling of God which is our body only. Like in olden days, the Jews used to cutoff their foreskin, we being believer’s of God, need to put off the sinfulness away from our body.
Symbolically, when we were buried in the waters of Baptism, we declared that the old sinful man or woman is dead and now the newly risen person is a new creation in Christ and a born again believer in Christ.
Now, if you are risen with the same understanding, there is nothing for you to desire after anything in this world. That does not mean you should not live a prosperous life, no job, no family and no children etc,. But it means, don’t desire after the sinfulness of the world. Our focus is now on the heavenly things. Why?
Who (Jesus) hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: -Colossians 1:13
We are translated unto the kingdom of Jesus Christ as believers. Now, we are supposed to seek the things which are above!
Now, our burial in the waters of Baptism was by faith, our resurrection from the waters of the Baptism as a newly born again man is by faith. Then finding the things of heaven from the word of God is also by faith.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. -James 3:17
There is a wisdom on the earth and in the above verse, we see the wisdom from above which is heaven. This wisdom is pure, peacable, gentle and easy to be intreated and full of mercy and good fruits, no partiality and hypocrisy. We need to seek this wisdom to be filled with.
But now I go my way to him that sent me … It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. -John 16:5-7
The Holy Spirit is sent from above from the Father. He was sent for a purpose and he was sent as an advance to taste the heaven on this earth. He was sent to enable us with the spiritual gifts. We need to seek him on this earth. How? By faith.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. -John 1:1 &14
The word was sent from above who is Jesus Christ him self. We need to seek him in the written word which we call as Bible. If we carefully read Proverbs 3, we can see that the wisdom it talks about is nothing but Jesus. How can we follow Jesus? by faith again.
So if we are risen with Christ, we need to seek the things of heaven which are the wisdom of God in every situation in our life. We need to seek the Holy Spirit of God to bear fruit for God and glorify him. We need to seek Jesus from the word of God. Because he is the true way, true light and true life.
You need faith to seek things of heaven!
Prayer
Dear loving heavenly Father, thank you very much for helping me to understand the things of heaven. You have given me the precious gifts of Jesus, Holy Spirit to be with me in my life and enable with with heavenly wisdom. Help me to surrender to the leading and accomplish your will on this earth by leveraging the support you have provided, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
