02-Jul-2024 – Believe God in your distress

Published by Bro. Sunil Binkam on

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance – Psalms 42:5

Psalm 42 is a profound source of encouragement, especially during times of distress and seemingly insurmountable difficulties. The opening verses reveal the Psalmist’s deep longing for God.

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? – Psalms 42:1,2

Just as a hart (deer) longs for water when it is not available, the Psalmist longs for the presence of God. Though God is omnipresent, the Psalmist yearns for the physical experience of worship in God’s temple, indicating a previous state of peace and joy.

When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday – Psalms 42:4

In regular, happy days, the Psalmist never missed an opportunity to be in God’s presence, worshipping Him for His goodness. This consistent practice of worship is a source of strength and hope in times of distress.

Despite his soul being cast down and burdened, the Psalmist does not lose hope. Instead, he encourages himself to hope for God’s intervention.

Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life – Psalms 42:8

The Psalmist hopes for God’s lovingkindness to manifest in his life, particularly when he has clarity (daytime). In our church, daytime represents clarity in our situations, like knowing the enemy’s position in a battle. But at night, representing unclear and difficult situations, the Psalmist holds onto the songs of the Lord—reminders of God’s past deeds and capabilities. This worship brings down the glory of God to be seated on the throne of praises, and whatever strategy the enemy might have, everything will be destroyed.

When you believe in God’s unchanging nature and His past interventions, you won’t let your situation dominate you. Instead, your faith will keep you grounded and hopeful.

Prayer

Dear loving Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love and grace. Thank You for teaching me today how to stand strong by believing that You intervene at the right time. Help me remember this truth and practice it in every situation. I pray in the name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
