01-Jan-2025 – A new year is a new season to sow

Behold, a sower went forth to sow – Matthew 13:3
First of all, I thank the Lord for bringing us into a new year. Every new year is like a new season. To understand today’s meditation, we need to grasp what a season is. A season, in general, is defined as “a time characterized by a particular circumstance or feature” – Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
The word “season” originates from the Old French seson and the Latin sation and serere. In Old French, seson means “the appropriate time,” while sation and serere mean “to sow.” Hence, the word season originated from the concept of the appropriate time for sowing.
If we consider the characteristics of a season, it is a recurring cycle of activities over a defined period. Yesterday, I shared the following on my WhatsApp status:
Time is a continuous cycle of opportunities. Chronos is a one-time setup that flows uninterrupted, representing the infinite timeline. Kairos is the opportune moment granted by the will of God, opening doors to great achievements within Chronos.
This new year is a new season on the timeline. It is an opportune time chosen by God to sow again. If we view a season as the time to sow, there are certain activities that occur repeatedly in every sowing season. Below are the high-level activities for conceptual understanding:
- Preparation: The field is prepared before the seeds are sown. This activity is repeated for every crop season. Tilling, plowing, leveling, and similar techniques are used to prepare the field. The soil is enriched with the right nutrients by adding manure or fertilizers.
- Sowing: Seeds are selected and sown based on climatic conditions.
- Growth: During this phase, the field is provided with adequate water and light for germination and growth. Protective measures like weed management, pest control, and moisture level monitoring are carried out. Nutrients are supplied through manure and fertilizers.
- Harvest: The final crop, or fruit of the field, is gathered.
If we reflect on this new year in our lives, God is speaking to us through the parable of the sower in Matthew 13, showing us a new season to sow His seeds in our lives.
What is a seed? In agriculture, we know what a seed is, but I would define seeds as follows:
A seed is a small beginning that is carefully nurtured to produce the anticipated outcome.
To test this definition: a grain is the smallest beginning that is carefully sown and nurtured to produce the anticipated crop. Similarly, in your career, your effort to learn a skill is the smallest beginning that must be carefully nurtured to achieve mastery. In spiritual matters, reading and meditating on the Word of God is the smallest beginning that must be nurtured with the guidance of the Holy Spirit to produce the wisdom needed to apply to life’s circumstances.
This new year is a new season given by God to sow seeds once again. To do this, we need to prepare the field—our minds and hearts. If you think of it as just another day like yesterday, you may miss the opportunity for small beginnings. A farmer understands the value of the crop season; he prepares for sowing, ensures growth, and finally reaps the harvest.
The life given by God is the most valuable thing for us. Our life can be compared to a field. In a field, two outcomes are possible: you will either sow or not sow. If you sow, you can expect the desired fruit or outcome. If you don’t sow, weeds, thorns, thistles, dust, and other undesired outcomes will take over. Today, God is encouraging you to change your perception and make use of the Kairos moment of this new year.
I wish you a very happy new year—a season of new beginnings and successful outcomes—in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen!
